“Red River Nostalgia” evokes memories of Hanoi through Trang Bui’s singing

On the occasion of the 72nd anniversary of the Capital's Liberation Day (October 10, 1954 - October 10, 2026), musician Nguyen Thanh Trung released the song "Red River Nostalgia" on digital music platforms. Through the singing of Opera artist Bui Thi Trang, the work evokes the image of the Red River as a flow of time, memory, love and memories attached to Hanoi.

“Red River of Nostalgia” is the 10th composition written by musician Nguyen Thanh Trung about Hanoi, continuing the emotional flow he has spent many years expressing his love for the Capital through works such as “Old Hanoi”, “Street Coffee”, “Sidewalk Iced Tea”, “Cyco to Pick Up the Bride”, “Flowers of Youth”, “Autumn Returns to Life”… The new song is performed by Opera artist Bui Thi Trang, stage name Trang Bui; Musician Duong Duc Thuy is responsible for the arrangement and Meritorious Artist Hoang Tung is the music editor. For Nguyen Thanh Trung, this is a note of gratitude for the land that has nurtured many memories and become a source of inspiration throughout his creative journey.

In “Red River of Nostalgia”, the image of the river not only appears as a familiar geographical landmark of Hanoi but is also used as a fulcrum for inner vibrations. Layers of alluvium, riverbanks, human silhouettes and memories are interwoven to create a poetic space, where nostalgia for love blends with memories of family and homeland. According to musician Nguyen Thanh Trung, in his perception, Hanoi is always associated with spaces containing memories, in which the Red River is like a silent witness passing through many years of people’s lives, both bearing the mark of time and preserving things that seem long gone. The song’s emotional flow doesn’t just stop at the couple’s love story. From personal hurts and longings, the work gradually brings the listener back to the images of mother, father, the sunny beaches of childhood and the spiritual fulcrums that have followed each person through the years. Personal nostalgia is therefore expanded into affection for the homeland, so that the image of the Red River becomes the connection between the past and present, between personal memories and the general flow of Hanoi. Musician Nguyen Thanh Trung said he appreciated the harmony of Opera artist Trang Bui, arranger Duong Duc Thuy and Meritorious Artist Hoang Tung in the process of completing the work. According to him, Trang Bui’s vocal technique combined with a deep arrangement helps the song not only tell a story but also convey the deep emotions behind the lyrics, creating more space for listeners to find their own memories in the music. This is also the first time Opera artist Bui Thi Trang performed a composition by Nguyen Thanh Trung. Currently a soloist of the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet, Trang Bui said she was impressed with the use of images in the lyrics and the choice of singing style that combines classical vocal background with the lyrical colors of the work. After 20 years of living, studying and making art in Hanoi, performing a song about the Red River gives the female artist many special emotions. As the first person to perform the song, she also has the space to proactively create and build her own mark instead of being influenced by previous versions. According to Trang Bui, although she has been associated with the Opera stage for many years, she still has a lot of love for lyrical songs rich in images. Introducing classical vocal techniques into works closer to life is also the way the female artist hopes to narrow the gap between Opera and the public, helping listeners feel more naturally the beauty of a well-trained voice. Meritorious Artist Hoang Tung, who takes on the role of music editor, also assessed that “Red River of Nostalgia” has a lyrical structure rich in poetics, while the combination of Nguyen Thanh Trung’s creative thinking and Trang Bui’s voice creates a balance between technique and emotion.

Through the image of the Red River, the work not only evokes personal memories but also expands into a story about time, family, homeland and love for the city that has become a source of inspiration in many of the musician’s compositions.
