“The Roofless House” tells the story of the journey of strange families finding a home
“The trio moving forward together” Tho – Son – Hung.
The center of the story is the family Hanh and Toan, two people struggling with very everyday worries.
Hanh is a woman who sells vegetables at the market, taking care of her two children, Tho and Khang, alone in a family situation that is always filled with insecurity. At just 16 years old, Tho quickly understood the value of money. She knows how to be frugal, resourceful and is willing to do many things to share the burden with her mother. In another situation, Toan is a widower who works as a driver, struggling every day to raise his two children, Triet and Mai. What he wants is not too big, just to find a place stable enough for his children to grow up in peace. An unexpected fate brings two unrelated families into each other’s lives. However, living under the same roof does not mean that everyone immediately becomes relatives. Differences in personality, initial prejudices, and collisions between adults cause relationships to constantly create conflicts. On the children’s side, the wariness, discomfort, and flirtatiousness towards each other also create a series of situations that are both humorous, close, and filled with many emotional struggles. Through each encounter, each person gradually sees that behind the other person’s appearance are worries, wounds and desires that are very similar to their own. “The roofless house” therefore does not just tell a familiar “basket of trash” story. The film goes deeper into the journey of people who have been hurt, have to overcome social prejudice and the fear of failure again when deciding to open their hearts to a new relationship.
In that process, the children’s emotions when their parents decide to “move on” becomes one of the notable psychological routes.
Not only do adults have to learn to adapt, children also have to face changes in the family, learn to accept people who are not related by blood, and gradually find attachment.
The film chooses the setting of a northern midland region in the 2010s, a time when the urbanization process had not yet covered local life.
Tho, Khang, Mai and Triet – children who are not related by blood but become close siblings.
The space of tea hills, rural markets, three-room houses, wood stoves, straw piles, traditional dishes and folk games create a rustic and familiar world. These images not only serve the story’s context but also evoke the childhood memories of a generation. Besides the family line, the film also brings the pure colors of youth through the trio of Poetry – Son – Hung. The three characters have completely different starting points and personalities. Hung is a student from a well-off background but is bored with studying. Son is the class president who studies well and has a gentle personality but grew up without knowing who his father was. Meanwhile, Tho is both good at studying and highly values money, to the point of being willing to tutor a friend he doesn’t like just to earn more income. Three seemingly difficult personalities to harmonize gradually become complementary pieces. They motivate each other to progress, appear next to each other in times of confusion and fear, and together make promises for the future. The young characters therefore give the film a gentle, positive tone, creating balance with the pressures of life and family conflicts of adults. “The Roofless House” was made by director Bui Tien Huy and director Pham Gia Phuong. Director Bui Tien Huy has made his mark through many projects about family and psychology such as “Loving the sunny day”, “Us 8 years later”, “Countdown clock”. Meanwhile, director Pham Gia Phuong has participated in projects of many different colors such as the crime film “Unique” and the youthful spirit work “One millimeter from you”. The film also brings together a cast of many generations. Duy Hung takes on the role of Toan and Minh Huyen plays Hanh, creating a pair of characters combining for the first time on screen. Besides, there are young actors including Thu Ha as Tho, Minh Xiu as Khang, Phu Quy as Triet, Khanh An as Mai, Nam Viet as Hung and Son Tung as Son. Through the stories of ordinary workers, the film aims to exploit familiar worries about family, economics, children and the desire to have a place to return. From initially being complete strangers, the characters gradually overcome their reservations and differences to understand that a home is not only created by blood relations but also from sharing, responsibility and choosing to stay together. “House without a roof” is expected to air on VTV3 in October 2026, at 8:00 p.m. every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
